I Compared 5 Federal Contract Platforms - Here's What I Found
When I started my government contracting business, I tried pretty much every tool out there. Here's what I found.
SAM.gov
Price: Free
You have to use it—every opportunity is posted here. But actually trying to find anything? Good luck. The search is terrible, it times out constantly, and the filters make no sense.
I once spent 2 hours trying to filter by SDVOSB set-asides. Ended up with results that included full and open competitions. Cool.
Bottom line: Use it to verify opportunities exist. Don't use it to find them.
GovWin (Deltek)
Price: $3,000 - $15,000+/year
GovWin is legitimately good. Deep data on contracts, who's winning what, agency spending patterns. If you're a large contractor with a BD team, it's worth it.
But I'm not a large contractor. I was a one-person shop trying to find my first few contracts. $8,000 for software wasn't in the budget.
Bottom line: Great if you can afford it. Most small businesses can't.
GovTribe
Price: $600 - $2,400/year
Better than SAM.gov, cheaper than GovWin. Nice interface, decent search, shows you award history. I used it for a while.
The problem was it still felt like it was built for bigger companies. And $2,400 a year adds up when you're not winning contracts yet.
Bottom line: Solid middle option if you have the budget.
HigherGov
Price: $1,200 - $6,000/year
Newer player. Clean interface, good competitive intel. But pricing gets expensive fast once you need the features that actually matter.
Bottom line: Worth a look, but watch the pricing tiers.
GovIntel
Price: $25/month ($250/year)
Yeah, I built this one. So take this with a grain of salt.
I built it because I couldn't afford the other options and SAM.gov was making me lose my mind. It does the basics well: matches opportunities to your NAICS codes and certifications, sends daily emails, has an AI thing that helps with proposals.
It doesn't have the deep market intelligence that GovWin has. If you need to know what the Army spent on IT services in FY23 broken down by command, this isn't it.
But if you just need to find contracts that match your business without spending thousands? That's what it does.
Bottom line: Best option for small businesses on a budget. Obviously biased.
